'Super Bowl of Smarts' brings on robot invasion
It's a loud, common call at the Georgia Dome this week. High school students, volunteer parents and teachers ensure the coast is clear for robot competitors to make their way to and from "the pits" and the competition floor. With nicknames such as "The Killer Bees" or "Robotic Knights," and T-shirts with slogans "We Kick Bot," more than 10,000 kids as young as 9 are showing why the FIRST Championship is known as "The Super Bowl of Smarts." These young people have six weeks to perfect their machines. And they have the enthusiasm of any athletic competition. From tie-dyed shirts to human hair dyed in school colors, competitors from 23 countries showed that math, science and brains can provide a lot of excitement. (Watch why building robots is only part of the experience ) The students' creations are made with the same basic parts.
FIRST robotics team a winner
A Saginaw Career Complex robotics team is looking ahead to the FIRST national championships in Atlanta after capturing a regional championship over the weekend. Team Phoenix emerged as the top squad from a field of 64 during the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology's West Michigan Regional at Grand Valley State University in Allendale. The 16 students will head to the finals at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta Thursday through Saturday, April 12-14. The competition for this season is "Rack 'n Roll," a game where the robots pick up inner tubes and hang them on a tower of swaying posts while keeping the competitors' robots from doing the same. v .
Robot Sex Club Tout Works Hard For His Money
In an ideal future, we see robots doing tasks for humans that might be too dangerous or trivial. Using robots to work as a tout for sex clubs didn't quite make my list of potential robot jobs but those in Osaka, Japan have other ideas. Due to a law which prohibits humans from soliciting customers by pointing them to local sex clubs, this is now a job that only a robot can do. Meanwhile, Osaka's new mechanical adult information center used to direct traffic around construction sites. It cost around $4,000 to get it upgraded for it's new job and the robot can now be seen attracting attention with a sign that reads "Ask me!", which it periodically raises up and down. I doubt the new human-sized robot-tout has much of an opinion about its career change position but the "sailor suit" high school uniform kind of says it all.
